AIDS is the terminal stage of HIV infection. At this stage of the illness, there is a high risk of mortality as the immune system is severely impaired. Patients are also at risk for a variety of AIDS-related illnesses, which may be directly-related to the primary condition, or may be illnesses that are “opportunistic” in nature. These types of AIDS-related Illnessconditions occur mainly due to the patient’s weakened immune system, and probably wouldn’t pose a significant health risk in an otherwise healthy person.

AIDS is a very complex condition and it can cause a variety of symptoms, some of which are caused by the primary condition and other caused by opportunistic illnesses. AIDS patients typically suffer from fever, chill, sweating, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, loss of weight, and overwhelming fatigue.

Marijuana can be beneficial to AIDS patients, as it may help restore appetite, encourage more restful sleep, and control nausea. Because of the increased risk of respiratory system conditions due to their impaired immune systems, it is advisable for AIDS patients to avoid smoking marijuana and to use vaporizers instead.
